I was in Kansas City for the weekend, and I needed to get a six mile run in.
But I didn't want to run. I wanted to chill with my cute nephew. I wanted to hang out with my family. But mainly, I just didn't want to run. :)
But I skipped last week's long run and didn't think it would be wise to skip two long runs in a row...especially because it is the two weeks before the Official Grandma's Marathon Training kickoff.
So I made a bargain with myself. I would head out for a run, and just do a quick three. Three is better than zero, right??
So I laced up the shoes and headed out.
Sidenote: I don't really like running in the wind. I don't really like running in strange places without a "game plan" of the route I'm going to run. I don't like running in neighborhoods with cookie-cutter houses.
So I mentioned that I was in Kansas City. Guess where I ran? Windy, unfamiliar, surburbian Olathe.
GAH.
The first mile sucked. SUCKED. I was running uphill, into the wind, and into theThird Circle Of Hell heart of surburbia. I wanted so badly to turn around...but I convinced myself to run just a half a mile more before turning around.
Somewhere in this next half mile, I started to feel good. I started enjoying the run. I was enjoying the sun, the crisp air, being outside. I was in that happy place...the happy place that makes me love running so much.
So I made it to the 1.5 mile mark and was starting to turn around when I spotted it. Garmin Corporate Headquarters. THE TEMPLE OF ALL THINGS HOLY. Garmin, Praise Be Thy Name.

The Temple...of AWESOME
I wistfully looked at the beautiful curvy building in the distance, maybe a mile away, and turned around, ready to head back. I ran for .1 miles in the direction of "home," when all of a sudden...
I couldn't stop myself. It was like Carmen the Garmin was being drawn to the mothership.
I turned around and started heading for Garmin.
I ran until I reached the building, touched the door, and headed back "home."
Six miles in the bank.
The best part? My average pace for this six-miler was faster than anything I've run this winter.
It's almost like I went to the temple and was Healed By The Power Of The Almighty Garmin.

Okay, so this wasn't taken on my run. My brother works at Garmin and we took a quick spin through the offices the next day. I thought I should say a prayer of thanks to The Almighty.
Pace: 10:00
Distance: 6.0 miles
Average HR: 166

dude - my future in-laws live in olathe. i refuse to run outside out there for fear of egetting hit by a semi on the back country roads, or lost in the subdivisions.
so i scoped out the local YMCA, and make an appearence.
funny thing - i never heard of olathe before dating the Man, and nowI can't get away from it.
Oh, speaking of - any chance you'll be out there running the Olathe 1/2 marathon next month? we'll be out there for our engagement party, kicked of by the race in the morning.
