Race Report: Bolder Boulder 2008
It was finally here. Race day.

Around Christmas, I talked a few cousins into running the Boulder Boulder...as their first race EVER. The 2006 Boulder Boulder was my first "real" race (I'd ran a 5k a few months before just so I had a little race experience) and the experience that I had in Boulder made me want more. More running. More race t-shirts. More miles. It made me want to be a runner. If the BB06 had sucked, I probably would have hung up my running shoes and I wouldn't be the whiny slacker-ass runner that I am today.

But I digress. Race day.

Because of my St. Cloud Half Marathon time, I was able to get into a qualifying wave, which meant that I wouldn't have to weave through the throng of walkers in the later waves. That also meant that my wave started the race at 7:20. The cousin wave start time? 8:30. Yeah, I was hoping to be done before they started.

I walked about a mile to the start, just in time to see the first waves take off. Dude. These people are FAST. And...what?? Is that guy wearing a gorilla suit??

I finally reached the start line.

In the back of my mind, I kept thinking "9:30 miles...9:30 miles..."

I donned my trusty pirate eye patch, snapped a quick self portrait...

ARRRRRGGGGGH!

And we were off.

Mile 1: 9:45 I can do it!! Well, almost. I'm sure I'll have a kick at the end and my average will be a 9:30.

Hey look! The Blues Brothers! And also...ominous clouds in the sky

Mile 2: 10:11 About that "I can do it" bullshit...Just kidding. How 'bout a 10-minute mile? No? Still too fast? How 'bout 10:11 then.

Mile 3: 10:36 If I'm not going to run sub-60, I might as well slow down and enjoy this bad boy.

Mile 4: 10:39 I think I've found my weakness. RUNNING.

Things could be worse. At least I don't have water-logged shoes like this girl.

Mile 5: 10:16 BACON!! Seriously. People were handing out bacon. And VEGGIE BACON!!

I am a master photographer

Mile 6: 9:53 Almost Done! One last hill, and...Whew. Get me out of here.

And finally...I crossed the finish line. Praise the Baby Jesus. I was DONE.

Nice report. Your trusty pirate look was awesome. Why was that guy running in the first wave with a gorilla custome...isn't there some rule against that?

Either way, you ran a great race and took some nice pictures (I blame the glitches more on your eye patch than on your skills). You should be proud.

And what's this about a second lap? You had so much fun you decided to run in twice?!

I wonder if the gorilla went down the water slide (is that the name of a children's book, btw?) He's carry an extra few pounds of water the rest of the way in all that fur.

Nice job! No Slip n Slide for you?

I had never heard of the Bolder Boulder until yours and Vanilla's recaps, but now it sounds fantastic and I want to give it a try!

Love the pirate patch - cute as a costume and it won't mess up your running either!

Lap 2?

Oh, I get it. You did finish before your cousins started so you ran a 20K!

Fun!

I just dno't get the slip n slide thing> Who would want soggy shoes if it wasn't raining? And then to have to wear wet hot clothing? ick. And knowing me, I would bang up my knee or something stupid.

Good job!

Nice pic - the pirate look suits you. :)

Great job on the race! It looks like the veggie bacon at mile 5 gave you just the boost you needed!
