The Des Moines Half Marathon
Has been conquered.

I arrived in Des Moines on Saturday, picked up my race packet, met up with Chuck and Emily, and headed to Erin's. Erin is so great. She cooked up a big ol' pasta feast so Chuck and I could carb load. It was glorious! We stuffed ourselves with pasta and lots of bread. My pores were oozing with garlic. :) I headed to bed at about midnight. I didn't fall asleep right away because I was So. Damn. Nervous.

Sunday. Race Day. I got up at 5am. And I'm not a morning person. I actually woke up at 4:45, paranoid that I'd overslept and missed my alarm. I ate a bagel and then crawled back into bed, hoping to get just a little bit more sleep before the run. Naturally, it was difficult getting back to sleep, but I did manage to catch a few more winks. When I woke up at 6:15, my teeth hurt. Yeah, I grind my teeth in my sleep when I'm stressed. So I crawled out of my cozy bed, tossed on my running gear, ate a banana, drank some gatorade, and we headed downtown.

I was tweaking before the race as we were standing at the starting line, waiting for it to start. It was pretty chilly and I was pretty certain that I had underdressed and was going to freeze my ass off. But it turned out fine. As soon as I started running, the blood started flowing and I wasn't cold at all.

I met up with the 2:10 pace group and stuck with Brian, our pace leader, the entire time (except when I had to hit the port-a-potty around mile 4). It was so nice to run with the pace group - I didn't have to worry about checking my Forerunner to make sure I was on track, I just had to keep up with my group. I was laughing and smiling the whole way - it was a great run!

With about 2 miles to go, Brian said that his Forerunner was off and that we'd really have to pick up the pace to make our 2:10 goal. We ran mile 12 about 30 seconds faster than our 10-minute-mile goal, but it wasn't enough.

As we hit the 12.5 mile mark, I broke away from the pace group. I had enough energy for a pretty good kick. It felt good to pass people in the home stretch!

I crossed the finish line with a time of 2:12:21. It was exhilarating! I had just ran my farthest distance. A year ago, I couldn't even run for half a mile before becoming winded, and I had just ran 13.1 miles. It's amazing what you can accomplish in 10 short months!!

I am one step closer to running a full marathon. Next up: Grandma's Marathon - June 2007. I don't even want to think about how nervous I'll get before this run. It'll be a doozy! :)

OMG It is such a small world sometimes.

1. I am from the Twin Cities, just stuck in Iowa for now.
2. I was at the DSM Marathon as a volunteer. I was supposed to run the half but I have stress fractures and cannot run.
