I know. Dozens of you are dying to hear about my shins.
I met with the orthotic-man and he said...drumroll please...that orthotics are not needed. Yet. He referred me to a high-end insole that will do the job, and if they don't work for me, then we can choose the orthotic route. Thank you, orthotic-man! You saved me $400!
I did, however, need a lift put in my right shoe. Turns out, my right leg is about 1/4 of an inch shorter than my left leg. He said that most peoples legs aren't perfectly symmetrical...but it doesn't matter because most people don't run marathons. I probably would have never noticed the difference if I hadn't started running. The asymmetry was causing my muscles to pull in weird directions to try and correct for the imbalance. Now that the asymmetry has been fixed, my muscles should go back to normal and my shin splints should go away. He said I probably don't even need to take time off from running for them to heal. My hero!!
